What you need to consider when adopting a dog

Taking a dog to live with you means taking on a lot of responsibility. A dog needs
your affection, time, consistency and ultimately money. Therefore, you should carefully consider whether you really want to and/or can make this commitment.

Which dog is best for me?

First of all, you must be aware that puppies or “new” dogs are not yet able to stay alone for long. Even adult dogs from animal shelters often still have a lot to learn and may not be completely house-trained. You have to remember that they have lived on the street or in a shelter. So do you have enough time to devote to the dog in this first phase?

Everyday life and holidays

What does it look like when the dog has settled in with you? Where can you keep the dog
while you are at work or when you go on holiday? What happens if you are ill? Are there family members and/or friends who support you?

Legal notice

Of course, there are also bureaucratic issues: don’t forget to register the dog with the municipality and to insure it (often included in the household insurance).

Financial

The financial aspect is not insignificant. Are you able to feed the dog, pay dog tax and pay for vet visits?

Training

And finally, you should also consider training: dogs need to be educated and trained. This is where your time, patience and consistency are needed.
